Class IV High Power Laser Therapy
Class IV Laser Therapy is now available at North Brunswick Chiropractic!
Our office now has the strongest Class IV laser in the country! This specialized form of laser therapy works by delivering high powered concentrated light energy to targeted areas of the body, stimulating cellular activity, reducing inflammation, accelerating the healing process, and ultimately producing pain relief.
We choose to use laser therapy as a natural approach to healthcare, rather than depending on surgery, injections or drugs for treatment and relief. Find out more about how Class IV laser therapy works, and what you can expect when you visit our office for this type of treatment.
At Our Office;
We use safe and painless high intensity laser therapy to trigger a number of functions of healing at the cellular level. These include improving circulation, which boosts your immune response and stimulates healthy healing of injured or damaged tissue. Laser therapy uses a scientific method called photo biomodulation to achieve these cell-level changes.
Class IV laser therapy is non-invasive. Furthermore, therapeutic treatment laser therapy does not burn or cut through the skin because the action is photochemical, not thermal like surgical lasers. In fact, most patients enjoy the mild heating of the laser. After a treatment, you will likely begin seeing positive effects almost instantaneously. However, we recommend more than one visit for long-term pain relief and injury healing.
THE KDT LASER DIFFERENCE
KDT High Intensity Laser Therapy delivers much more energy dosage than other lasers; this provides patients a much faster recovery with our treatments compared to other low level or cold lasers. Our KDT 60-Watt Laser delivers greater than 100 times more energy per minute than the strongest low-level cold laser. Patients also love the heating side effect that is generated from the high intensity laser energy. Due to the increased power, the KDT Laser system also creates much more tissue penetration which allows for more effective results.
The image below will help you better understand why the KDT laser is the right choice for your problem. Our laser system can also treat pain and symptoms associated with skin conditions such as shingles, burns, open wounds, and many other problems due to our ability to adjust the power output settings and apply a pulse mode as well. High Intensity laser therapy has been shown to improve range of motion, reduce pain, and inflammation in even one treatment! Positive outcomes can be seen and felt immediately, this is why we choose this laser platform to best treat your needs.
JOINT AND MUSCLE PAIN RELIEF
The most beneficial use for Class IV laser therapy is pain relief. Using laser treatments, we can offer pain relief for inflammatory conditions, such as muscle spasms, plantar fasciitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and bursitis. We also use this treatment for damaged ligament pain relief.
If you suffer from a connective tissue disorder or injury, such as tendonitis, myo-fasciitis, radicular pain, sprains, or effusion, we can use laser treatments for tissue healing as well.

What is high intensity Class IV laser therapy?Class IV laser therapy is the use of specific wavelengths of light (red and near-infrared) to stimulate the body's natural ability to heal. The effects of laser energy include improved healing time, pain reduction, increased circulation and decreased swelling. Class IV laser therapy is an FDA cleared therapeutic treatment that manages pain and inflammation while accelerating tissue regeneration. Laser energy increases circulation, drawing water, oxygen, and nutrients to the damaged area. This creates an optimal healing environment that reduces inflammation, swelling, muscle spasm, stiffness and pain. During laser therapy, infrared laser light interacts with tissues at the cellular level increasing metabolic activity within the cell (photobiomodulation).

What are the top 10 conditions best treated with Class IV laser therapy?1. Acute sprain/strains 2. Acute plantar fasciitis 3. Acute tennis or golfer’s elbow 4. Acute TMJ syndrome 5. Bursitis, arthritis, or tears of the shoulder 6. Knee pain (Patella tendonitis, RA flare, pain from tears) 7. Disc herniations, sciatica, and stenosis flares (best used in conjunction with chiropractic or spinal decompression treatment) 8. Peripheral Neuropathy (non-diabetic) 9. Shingles (not treated at our office) 10. Wounds (not treated at our office)
-
Does it hurt? No. However, it does produce warmth. It is typically mild and soothing. If it gets too intense or feels like a burning sensation, you can let your staff person know. We can adjust the settings to be less intense.
-
Are all lasers the same? No, there are different types of lasers. Class IV laser therapy is being used at our office. Class IV lasers can penetrate over 4 inches into tissue. Our Class IV laser uses three therapeutic wavelengths of 810 nm, 980 nm, and 1064 nm and incorporates 20 watts of power with each wavelength for a total output of 60 watts (strongest FDA approved wattage). It is a type of high-end photobiomodulation. The laser therapy system we use represents the newest innovation in laser therapy.
-
Is this a "cold laser"?No. This is high intensity laser therapy (HILT) and is a Class IV medical laser. "Cold lasers" are Class III lasers. Class IV lasers vary in intensity by the wattage they have. The laser we have is a 60 watt laser and the highest power laser that is cleared by the FDA for therapeutic use. For comparison purposes, we used to have a cold laser at our office and it could administer up to 5 Joules of energy to the treatment area per minute. Our new 60 watt laser can produce up to 3,600 Joules of energy in that same minute. The higher wattage the laser, the quicker the treatment time, and the more expensive the laser.
-
How long does each treatment take? The typical treatment is approximately 5 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated. If you have had laser elsewhere, you might have experienced longer treatment times. Due to the high power nature of our laser, treatment times are shorter (for example, a 20 watt laser would take 15 minutes to deliver same energy as 5 minutes of a 60 watt laser treatment). Many also believe that the higher power can provide deeper penetration to the treatment area (but currently, there is not any documented research on this).
-
How should you prepare for your treatment? This treatment is performed directly on the skin. The light has to be able to be absorbed to be effective. If the treatment needs to be performed on a knee, for example, please bring/wear clothing that would allow access to the knee.
-
Are there any risks associated with Class IV Medical Laser Therapy?Class IV Medical laser is extremely safe provided it is applied by a trained staff member. It is not used near the eyes due to the sensitivity of the retina; therefore, all patients wear protective safety glasses during the treatment if they are not lying face down. It cannot be used over the thyroid gland. Patients with seizures should not look at the site during the treatment. Some of the treatment protocols use a pulsed wave, which results in a rapid flickering of the aiming beam. If you feel a burning sensation during treatment, immediately make the staff aware. They can easily adjust the laser settings to be less intense. Contraindications to laser therapy include the following: • Active Cancer diagnosis or Tumors • Over a Pacemaker • Over pregnant abdomen or lower back in pregnant patient • Over Reproductive organs • Direct eye exposure

How often should a patient be treated?Chronic conditions take more time and more treatments while acute injuries can heal the quickest with aggressive and very frequent treatments. Acute conditions should be treated early and frequently for best results. You can even be treated daily if you had an extreme amount of pain. For most acute conditions, it is recommended to have 6 treatments within a 2-week timeframe. More chronic problems respond better when treatments area spaced out to 2 times a week, tapering to once a week, or once every other week, with improvement. For most chronic conditions, 12 treatments are recommended over 6 weeks. Chronic conditions are not as curative as acute conditions with Class IV laser. After initially 12 treatments, maintenance treatments are recommended at 2x/month. Expectations are 50-60% improvement in quality of life, range of motion, and pain reduction with inflammation control.
-
How many treatments does it take? This depends on the condition or injury and how severe it is. For some acute conditions, 4-6 treatments may be sufficient. Chronic conditions may require 12 to 15 (or more) treatments. Conditions such as severe arthritis may require ongoing periodic care to control pain.
-
How long until results are felt? You may feel improvement in your condition or pain reduction after the very first treatment. Sometimes, you will not feel improvement for several treatments. This does not mean that nothing is happening. Each treatment is cumulative. It will sometimes take 3 to 4 sessions to feel the effects as it builds up. Results typically continue weeks to months after the therapy as the body continues to regenerate and heal the connective tissues.
-
Can I use laser with chiropractic or spinal decompression treatment?Yes! It works great as an adjunctive therapy as well. We refer to this as our “speed boost” to faster recovery! Also, if you choose to take advantage of same day laser, the cost of laser is reduced to $35 if treated on the same area and same day as your chiropractic or decompression treatment.
-
Can I be treated during pregnancy?Yes, just not directly over the abdomen or the low back.
-
Can high intensity laser therapy be used over medical implants or over metal?Yes, treatments can be safely administered over surgical-medical implants or metal. Since the mechanism of action is photochemical, there is no deep heating involved with the laser treatments. Treatments can be administered post-surgery for faster healing and recovery.
-
What is the disadvantage of laser therapy?Unfortunately, it is not covered by insurance. This treatment is self-pay. We can sell individual treatments or packages of visits making laser therapy more affordable.
